The discovery of magnetohydrodynamic waves

چکیده

The discovery of magnetohydrodynamic waves was a major breakthrough in plasma physics and its applications to space physics and fusion research. The waves were discovered by Hannes Alfvén and are therefore also called Alfvén Waves. The discovery was typical of Alfvén’s outstanding ability to derive results of great generality from analysis of specific problems—in this case, the sunspots and the sunspot cycle. It was also typical of his electrodynamic approach to astrophysical problems. It took a long time before his discovery was generally accepted, partly because of the contemporary lack of means to verify the waves experimentally. The experimental verification of the magnetohydrodynamic waves came gradually many years later, beginning with experiments in liquid metals. It was not until the end of the 1950s that experiments were performed in plasmas. These clearly and conclusively demonstrated the existence and properties of magnetohydrodynamic waves, in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction of Alfvén. The discovery of the magnetohydrodynamic waves opened a whole new field of physics—magnetohydrodynamics, which is of profound importance especially, but not only, in plasma physics. At the same time as the magnetohydrodynamic waves, Hannes Alfvén also discovered another magnetohydrodynamic concept, the frozen-in magnetic field. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Linear coupling and over-reflection phenomena of magnetohydrodynamic waves in smooth shear flows

Abstract Special features of magnetohydrodynamic waves linear dynamics in smooth shear flows are studied. Quantitative asymptotic and numerical analysis are performed for wide range of system parameters when basic flow has constant shear of velocity and uniform magnetic field is parallel to the basic flow. The special features consist of magnetohydrodynamic wave mutual transformation and over-r...

Magnetohydrodynamic waves and coronal seismology: an overview of recent results.

Recent observations have revealed that magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and oscillations are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere, with a wide range of periods. We give a brief review of some aspects of MHD waves and coronal seismology that have recently been the focus of intense debate or are newly emerging. In particular, we focus on four topics: (i) the current controversy surrounding propagati...

Magnetohydrodynamic waves in coronal polar plumes.

Polar plumes are cool, dense, linear, magnetically open structures that arise from predominantly unipolar magnetic footpoints in the solar polar coronal holes. As the Alfvén speed is decreased in plumes in comparison with the surrounding medium, these structures are natural waveguides for fast and slow magnetoacoustic waves. The simplicity of the geometry of polar plumes makes them an ideal tes...

Generation of density inhomogeneities by magnetohydrodynamic waves in two dimensions

Using two dimensional simulations, we study the formation of structures with a highdensity contrast by magnetohydrodynamic waves in regions in which the ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure is small. The initial state is a uniform background perturbed by fast-mode wave. Our most significant result is that dense structures persist for far longer in a two-dimensional simulation than in the one-d...

Waves and Instabilities in Accretion Disks : MHD Spectroscopic Analysis

A complete analytical and numerical treatment of all magnetohydrodynamic waves and instabilities for radially stratified, magnetized accretion disks is presented. The instabilities are a possible source of anomalous transport. While recovering results on known hydrodynamic and both weak-and strong-field mag-netohydrodynamic perturbations, the full magnetohydrodynamic spectra for a realistic acc...
